Leilah Wendell has been running her New Orleans gallery Westgate Necromantic since 1979, which is exclusively devoted to the Angel of Death, Azrael. This site is an absolute must-see for decor and artwork that is as beautiful as it is macabre, with the subject matter treated not only with respect and dignity but a unique artistic sensibility – the visual equivalent of her writings, echoing the theme of don’t be afraid. This week’s Oddity goes to Leilah’s handcrafted lamps, and “She Who Waits” is a good example of the way her skeletons are given a lively Day of the Dead essence within their gothic trappings.
