Oddity of the Week: Medical-laced tops

Crimson Empress Love Bound top

Medical lacing is something that hasn’t been played around with nearly enough, in my opinion. Instead of crisscrossing the cord between two lines of grommets, it’s stretched fanlike around the body and holds so much promise for fashion, way beyond the body support it was originally designed for. I’m not sure if the vintage medical corsets of yore were the inspiration for this top by Crimson Empress, but they’ve certainly got the right idea with a fetching spread of cord across the bust, gathering at the shoulders and playing a sharp contrast of red on black. More, more!!

Manic Panic neon hair dyeAmerica’s first punk rock boutique was born back in the mid 70’s when two sisters opened a storefront with a couple racks of clothes, kicking off the popularity of NYC’s St. Mark’s Place as a playground for underground fashion and launching a line of cosmetics every color of the rainbow. The shop isn’t there anymore, but the place where punks and goths bought their green hair dye and eyeshadow during the 80’s is now online with all kinds of makeup and hair adornment.
