So here’s a photo of the dress (it’s the one all the way on the right). It’s one of my favorites, with braided trim around the neckline and chiffon panels that kick out from the skirt. My only complaint is, why did they put the brocade pattern sideways? Like damask, this is a pattern that’s supposed to draw your eyes downward. But, I forgave it.
Many years ago, I wore this dress to a posh San Francisco restaurant – The Stray and I were across the country from our families, and we decided to splash out on Christmas dinner since we were on our own. This was the kind of place that makes jackets mandatory for the guys, so I figured I’d go just as formal as my date, and this was a holiday and therefore deserving of dressup, yeah OK a gown! We showed up for our reservation, and the hostess was snooty. The waiter was snooty. The food was really not all that great. As we were slipping into our coats and getting ready to leave, the harpist came hurrying over. “I love your coat!” she purred, stroking the black lace on the sleeves, making noises about how much fun it would be to play the harp in them. (Picture here. It’s the duster on the right.)
So screw the stuck-up staff, and yay to the really sweet musician, from whom sartorial appreciation is a much finer compliment.
OK. On to the cats.

This is the very portrait of a bed pig. I was trying to get a pic of her wallowing around in the brocade and chiffon but all that came out was a furry blur. I think she’s enjoying these posts as much as I am.

Oh noes! An interloper! Bella has decided that one of my goth gowns is a
perfect spot for an impromptu wrestling match, and thus jumps on Polly’s head.

As you can see, Miss Polly gets
very upset when her sty of splendor gets disrupted. Bella left quickly after this shot to go shred sisal, and Pollywog was back to rolling around violently in purple floral brocade. And peace was restored to Kittybuttock Manor.

A UK boutique specializing in Japanese playthings and wearables, who have brought a smattering of their bricks-and-mortar stock online. The catalog is a little bit of this and that: tin robots, skull cardigans, graffiti tees from Terratag, kissclasp purses appliqued with cuteness, Russian doll socks, Mr. Messy coffee mugs, tartan tights, greeting cards styled after retro advertisements, Kreepsville 666 coffin mirrors, bear-eared snoods that unfurl into pocketed scarves, and of course Paul Frank and Hello Kitty.

This purse is a stellar example of revulsion-as-fashion, flaunting a shiny, twisted, come-touch-this surface – and a bright red interior. This functional leather sculpture is the creation of maskmaker Cecelio Castrillo Martinez, and a versatile little nightmare that would accessorize well for both fetish and psychobilly getups.

A mix of vintage finds and glittery medieval reproductions. Giant 1960’s boho necklaces, bakelite, a section just for Sam Niello Thai-deco goodies, and a page of cufflinks and tie bars for the guys among the usual rhinestone brooches and cocktail rings. The new stuff is devoted to the Renaissance, which besides bracelets and earrings, also includes the period-specific styles of girdle belts and collars of office, and some of it is modeled directly from movies and TV shows.

In recent years, the pixie style has evolved way beyond Tinkerbell tulle with the advent of earth tones, leaf patterns, and fun with headwear, all brought together by the finishing cinch of a elven pocket belt. On Etsy, upcycling has entered the game, as well as blending the details with other fashion genres. Below, this week’s treasures.

The practice of turning old sweaters into jawdropping outerwear is in full swing with a handful of designers who have harnessed the power of colorblocking. This coat’s extra-long hood can fall dramatically down the back, or transform into a self-matching scarf. And it’s now on sale since the seller’s college tuition is due. From
Designed By Gina Louise.

And some of the patchworking comes in more restrained, workwear-friendly versions, such as this funky-sleeved cardigan. And if you only want to add just a touch of color to an outfit, you can go with the armwarmers, which this shop has a bunch of. From
Viola Vintage.

Moving into more fantastical realms, the leaf pattern which has grown prevalent on woodsy hoodies and other faerie romperwear shows up on an off-the-shoulder sorceress gown, right down the the flowing sleeves. From
Timjan Design.

An apple-green tunic gets an off-the-shoulder neckline, leg o’ mutton sleeves that end in pointed gauntlets, a built-in cincher that laces up the back, and lettuce edging on the pixie points. A nice blend of modern and medieval that can go mini or maxi. From
Vaisto.

And, something for the kids. From the appropriately-named
Swirly Hats.

Bohemian style that mixes kurta and kimono flair into flowery little day dresses and broomstick skirts. Lots of Papillon, lots of embroidery and sequins. The jewelry throws Swarovski crystals into falls of gemstones and beads, and the aromatherapy page features soy candles that melt into massage oil.
