Friday Cat Blogging: Demonpile

One of the images that’s stuck with me from my teenage years – the days I used to wallpaper my bedroom walls with 80’s metal bands torn out of magazines – is a concert shot of Tom Araya. It’s a really cool photograph: he’s singing into a mic, everything a blur of light and shadow, the only thing in focus is one shining eye.

This week’s cat pic was supposed to be “awwwww, Bella jumped up on the bed to cuddle with Pollywog and Pollywog’s grooming her ears and they never really do this anymore and isn’t it so cute AWWWWWWWW” and instead my cat channels Slayer’s bass player.

TattooBrite

TattooBriteThis “cosmeceutical” tattoo aftercare product purports to brighten the colors of subdermal ink while protecting against long-term fading. The SPF 20 certainly doesn’t hurt against the damage of sunlight, and the two formulas include a gentler p.h. for sensitive skin and, ahem, delicate areas. While I haven’t personally tried this product, it sounds like a decent possibility for skin art that’s gone dull, especially when the price tag isn’t too bad for giving it a trial run.

Oddity of the Week: Damask clothes hampers

One of the decorating credos I live by is, “if it’s something you *have* to have in your household, try and make it as cool as you can.” And needing a place to fling one’s dirty gear is an excellent opportunity to add some baroqueness to one’s boudoir. The Victorian Trading Company comes to the rescue with a collapsible laundry bin that we have found can also double as a cat tunnel while everything’s being washed.

Tinker’s Witch Crafts

Tinker's Witch Crafts Harm None art cardEsoteric enchantments from New Jersey! This assemblage artist’s vision blends the earthy and spiritual with a rock’n'roll vibe: shrines take the form of flowery tiki huts, rustic witch dolls are behatted with tattoo print, the art cards are little collages of found Victoriana and ransom-note intensity, the jewelry clusters shiny bric-a-brac around glass and clay Third Eyes, the sock monkeys are voodoo dolls, and if that’s not enough, you can pick up a fez stitched up from shabby chic upholstery. Etsy Highlights: Bodacious boleros

The shrug: an awesome little accessory often overshadowed by the rage for the perfect handbag or pair of shoes. These tiny little jackets are fantastic for increasing wardrobe versatility, where one simple black strappy dress can go Victorian, cabaret, or fetish just from changing up the shoulders and sleeves. It can also offer a little extra warmth in formal settings that might have the air conditioning tuned a little too high.

Angelika Liv black lace boleroFour kinds of black lace make up this bolero, for a subtle pattern clash of wild florals.
The pleated ruffle around the collar makes for a nice dramatic finish. From Messages of Passion by Angelika Liv.

Ella Phante Phashion medieval cotton sleevesThe sleeves of a medieval noblewoman, done up in the organic cotton of today. Practical, and at the same time, the kind of thing that’s hard to keep from dancing around in. From Ella Phante Phashion.

EyeScream lightning bolt shrugThis metallic purple and spandex confection brings to mind the wild costuming of professional daredevils. Or the formfitting stagewear of 70’s glitterglam. Whatever it ends up being worn to, it will indeed be memorable. It’s also OOAK, so move it if you want it. From EyeScream Industries.

French Sugar Vintage polka dot wrapThe tulle wrap that ties behind the back is a popular design on Etsy, and this one takes the retro staple of polka dots out of the realm of solid fabrics, going for a sheer organza that turns them into champagne bubbles. From French Sugar Vintage.

Black Norns gothic boleroBlack satin is broken up by light green organza on the puff sleeves and high pleated collar, a good look for both wicked stepmothers and absinthe fairies who don’t mess around. From Black Norns.

YouTube Tuesdays: This jacket is a symbol of my individuality, and my belief in personal freedom

So this is going up kind of late today, and for that we have one of my favorite David Lynch clips: the “Love Me” scene from Wild at Heart. Laura Dern is GORGEOUS in this movie – I’m loving her early 90’s blonde-in-black getup here – Nicholas Cage, not so much. (And why is the singer from Powermad wearing a fanny pack? Ew.) This is definitely one of those WTF scenes where the surrealism comes not from sunny lawns nor glitzy surfaces, but pounding thrash suddenly turned into an impromptu ballad – and totally eaten up by the crowd. Yeah, totally implausible in reality, but the shot of the other dark-clad girls in the club swooning over an Elvis cover is priceless.
