chateau bizarre: hardcore glamour & curious finds, reviewed daily » etsy highlights http://www.chateaubizarre.com hardcore glamour & curious finds, reviewed daily Fri, 16 Jul 2010 20:51:10 +0000 en hourly 1 Etsy Highlights: Lucky black cats http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/07/14/etsy-highlights-lucky-black-cats/ http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/07/14/etsy-highlights-lucky-black-cats/#comments Wed, 14 Jul 2010 20:08:29 +0000 lilah wild http://www.chateaubizarre.com/?p=11373 First of all: it is wonderful to hear that all the blood, sweat, and tears put into the Chateau was such a hotly anticipated part of the day for many of you, and that it will be missed. Thank you for your kind words :)

Second, there seems to be this misconception that I’m erasing the entire site. I’m not about to throw away nine years’ worth of writing. So calm down, the links are not going anywhere.

On to this week’s finds: this Etsy Highlights is dedicated to Bella and Pollywog, my two little girls (one of whom is pawing at my bare foot as I write this, somebody needs a claw trim) – and to everyone who loves cats but finds most cat fashion too twee for palatable wardrobe integration. Felines are beautiful, angular, sensual creatures, and they really deserve better representation than Christmas sweatshirts.

Shixie 9 Lives necklaceThe word for pictures that change when you move them is “lenticular.” And here is a stellar example, a retro-60’s/70’s graphic from Eveready Batteries, the kind of jewelry that draws curious hands who all want to make the cat dive through the 9. From Shixie.
Iacua anise star cat pendantA pendant cast from an anise star with two seeds strategically left inside, ends up looking like an alien cat-face. Excellent revisioning of an organic element into something beautifully creepy. Iacua.
Portemone retro cat pursePerturbed eyes, rumpled fur, everything stays dignified with the presence of a brass kissclasp closure. From Portemone.
3 Cornered Moon 70's cat plaquesA pair of funky 70’s panthers await adoption into a swank party pad, where they can disdainfully gaze down at the proceedings from their perches of plaster. From 3 Cornered Moon.
Faerie FeelersThe product is Faerie Feelers, sparkly little bits of headwear that apparently can be worn by chill, tolerant felines. The model here is as striking as she is patient. From Faerie Feelers.

It’s not easily assembled with a sewing machine or jeweler’s tools, and ensuring a proper fit takes a level of precision well beyond the means of most small businesses. Happily, upcycling is in full swing on Etsy, where plain pumps are given new life with handpainted patterns and dollops of froof. And, of course, a few sellers are stepping out with unbridled artistic showboating.

Sole Sensations dragon heelI’m not sure if this seller’s works are intended for actual wear, but it’s amazing that you’re technically supposed to slip a foot somewhere into this. From Sole Sensations, whose utterly insane brisket flip-flop also deserves a mention.
Shake It Doll Shoes showgirl platformsBehold, the platform shoes of Marie Antoinette. Dig the gold beads draping over the back of the heel. And they’re 100% vegan! From Shake It Doll Shoes.
Pachainka Pink comic heelsPatent wedges get an update of Wonder Woman comics on the heels. A subtle and chic form of fandom that would look fab with a cocktail dress. From Pachainka Pink.
Steampunk Fortune clock heelsThese steampunk clock parts look almost tribal in their descent down the back of the heel. The rest of the shoe plays innocent and unadorned, saving the surprise for rear views. From Steampunk Fortune.
Lyons Mosaics high heel shoe chairIf you’ve ever lusted after a high heel boudoir chair but wanted something a bit more hardy than leopard plush, not only is this seat covered in bits of mirror, it’s designed to be left outdoors year-round. From Lyons Mosaics.

Treating light as a kind of artistic celebration and not a mere household necessity, they make for strong interior decorating summary statements, sending forth a room’s stylistic signature from within a burst of illumination. And there’s all kinds of imaginative riffs on the classic crystal-fest of the originals.

Alabelys blood chandelierThe choice of red to contrast against the clear elements turn the elegant lines sinister, as if splashed with drops of blood. From Fantasia Clear by Alabelys.
ThirteenTwenty bike sprocket chandelierThe closing of a neighborhood bike shop and an abandoned schoolhouse resulted in this industrial-chic waterfall of teardrop prisms and silver chain descending from a shiny sprocket. From ThirteenTwenty.
Attila Design red glass chandelierThis “modern urban hybrid conceptual glass chandelier” looks swiped from the circle of hell where Satan keeps the beet demons. From Attila Design.
Blodgett Lighthouse retro striped chandelierA retro vibe tidies things up towards kitschy minimalism with cute little striped lampshades and solid red. From The Blodgett Lighthouse.
Whimsical Collections teaparty chandelierAn amusement park teacup ride, in lamp form. This seller specializes in themed chandeliers for nurseries and other atmospheres of gentle surrealism. From Whimsical Collections.

Etsy Highlights: Flapper’s Delight http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/06/16/flappers-delight/ http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/06/16/flappers-delight/#comments Wed, 16 Jun 2010 20:08:24 +0000 lilah wild http://www.chateaubizarre.com/?p=11219 The Roaring Twenties is an utterly fascinating era in history: shrugging off restricive social norms and the heavy, fussy modes of dress that went with them, they set down the initial footprints of booze, cars, movies, nightclubs, and other forms of popular culture that have stuck with us ever since. The world’s first partygirls were creatures of pomp but practicality, too; still glamorous, still sparkling, but modified to the world’s sudden taste for speed and movement. Note how the dresses of the time were designed around all-night dancing – the hemlines raised for the legs to charleston unimpeded, the fringe to really show off the movement, corsets dispensed with altogether. It’s a wholly decadent yet utterly charming period to raid for accessories that can easily slip into a modern wardrobe.

Oh Mama summer clocheThis hat combines the best of both worlds: the upturned brim frames the face with go-getter moxie, while the fringe drops add a note of nighttime opulence. Best of all? It’s made of comfy, comfy cotton. ADORABLE. From Oh Mama.
The Recycled Soul fringe clutchEarth tones are gussied up with a line of regal tassels in this very juicy vintage find – the brand is Josef of Hollywood, although it was made in France, but either way, this looks like a bag that has stories to tell, and is quite ready for some new ones. From The Recycled Soul.
Peacock Gypsy Vintage silk turbanCertain factions of the internet have been screaming for the return of the turban. I’ll happily add my voice, because it takes a certain kind of woman to wear them, and we desperately need that woman to come back and run off these Housewives of Who-Cares County. Back to the item: glass beads do such nice things draped alongside the face, no? From Peacock Gypsy Vintage.
Pillow Talk NYC glass pearl necklaceThe long wraparound beads of the time still remain a shiny, versatile wardrobe staple for those moments when you need to dress like a grownup. Here, Czech glass pearls are made to be worn as two or three strands, with a little black dress offered as a serving suggestion and they’d also look fab peeking from between the lapels of a blazer. From Pillow Talk NYC.
Sedona Skye Mucha headpieceMade from 20,000 glass seed beads and 70 hours of blood, sweat, and tears, this dazzling bit of art nouveau fantasy came in second place at the California State Fair. According to the description, this is not the seller’s usual style, so yay for stepping outside one’s boundaries and bringing a Mucha flight of fancy into real life. Well done. From Sedona Skye.

Etsy Highlights: Crafty hands are the devil’s playground, too http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/06/09/etsy-highlights-crafty-hands-are-the-devils-playground-too/ http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/06/09/etsy-highlights-crafty-hands-are-the-devils-playground-too/#comments Thu, 10 Jun 2010 00:46:06 +0000 lilah wild http://www.chateaubizarre.com/?p=11164 So I just started another blog – more on that later – and the second post is the inspiration behind this week’s Highlights. What do you get when you type “Satan” into an Etsy search? Let’s fly down to the brimstone underside of indieland and find out!

Nocturnel Eclipse spiked gauntletsThese handmade gauntlets are covered in sporadically-placed chrome spikes and eagerly await the arms of a guitarist brought up on a steady diet of Celtic Frost. They look pretty mean on a dominatrix, too. From Nocturnel Eclipse.
Demention Designs goat head ringA silver ring bears the head of Baphomet – that is one grim little goat, and the nubby horns are a nice touch, too. From Demention Designs.
Crooked Thorne devil tarot cuffThe Devil from a nineteenth-century Italian tarot deck is acid-etched into a cuff of recycled sterling silver. A fine bauble for the artsy hellion. From Crooked Thorne.
Axcessory To Metal body armor necklaceCasting all subtlety to the four winds, this necklace proudly presents itself as “heavy metal body armour” with its panoply of inverted crosses, snakes, lightning bolts, and skulls. It looks like it should produce the all-important menacing jingle so essential to villainess getups. From Axessory To Metal.
Bubble Berries knitted devil tailAnd yes, this did share search results with all the aforementioned evil. A little devil tail for your little devil, awwww! And it’s knitted, awwwwww! From (awwwwww!) BubbleBerries.

The local rental campers have all been snapped up a few months ago, but it’s not quite time to stock up on the boil-in-a-bag Jaipur Vegetables yet. This is a very good place to comb one’s wardrobe for any good elven-burlesque-cowboy-cyber-bellydancer snazz to drag along, and if not, now’s the time to get those custom orders in.

Bubbles and Frown horned cocktail hatA cute little cocktail hat has sprouted a pair of squiggly horns, which are as adjustable as they are fantastical. The beaded fringe is a nice touch, proclaiming that the wearer is truly a creature of cabaret. From Bubbles and Frown.

Tom Banwell art nouveau leather maskLightweight leather is swirled into a an art nouveau mask, which enhances the features rather than covering them up. Which is definitely a good thing beneath a merciless sun. From Tom Banwell Designs.

Yab Yummi copper lightning earringsThese lovely earrings capture the shape of lightning in twisted spikes of rainbowed copper. They also blend nicely back into real-world outfits, a way to keep desert memories alive through more mundane moments. From YabYummi Creations.

Annieland bellydance pantsThe glamour of a skirt, the freedom of pants. Bellydance fashion once again demonstrates its awesomeness. Made to be shimmied in, these culottes also look like a light, comfy choice for surviving the daytime in intense heat. From Annieland.

PoofSkirts circus skirtAnd what would Burning Man be without people running around in stuff like this? Part mod, part cyber, totally circus, these skirts are fashioned so that not only does it bounce along with you while you walk, it snaps back into shape after maneuvering through crowds or other tight situations. Even better – you can get matching hairfalls. From PoofSkirts.

And about six bookmarks later, I realized I should just start putting the weekly post together alongside my own personal browsing. What can I say, I can’t get enough of this stuff.

Blazing Thimbles swirling plugsCrafted from polymer, a pair of knotwork-inspired swirls cascade down the sides of the face. Not only can you order them in the color and length of your choice, the gauge options include post-and-back “cheaters” for getting the look without the stretch. From Blazing Thimbles.

Elven Forest Creations slashed bellydance pantsSlash-and-cinch reconstruction, so popular as a t-shirt accent, appears on the thighs of a pair of bellydance pants. Check the alternate photos to see how very sweet indeed they look over a pair of contrasting tights. From Elven Forest Creations.

By Kristi Marie bandanna bellydance beltA bandanna pops up as the centerpiece of a fringe belt, lending an outlaw vibe to a traditional hip-showcasing accessory. And it comes with hair flowers! From Kristi Marie.

Dreaming Amelia bellydance cinched miniskirtThis little skirt features a flowery mesh overlay, a pixie ruffle, and a cinch to adjust the length. Best of all, it’s made for dancing, so it’s a figure-clinging shape that most enjoyably will not compress the hell out of your midsection. From Dreaming Amelia Designs.

Mean Kitty Wear 80's metal yoga pantsCreated from a yellow zebra stripe stretch print, these pants liberate the insane fabrics of 80’s pop metal bands from their skintight spandex hall of shame with a much more flattering split flare. A solid piece of playawear, for those who have to let it all out like David Lee Roth. From Mean Kitty Wear.

Dipped into again and again by the more glamour-minded eras, it’s currently enjoying major popularity on the accessories and housewares circuits, typically sliced from its baroque habitat to add a pop of energy to an otherwise minimalist milieu. In fashion, the place to put it would be the handbag.

Etsy Highlights: So nouveau http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/05/12/so-nouveau/ http://www.chateaubizarre.com/2010/05/12/so-nouveau/#comments Thu, 13 May 2010 03:26:15 +0000 lilah wild http://www.chateaubizarre.com/?p=11024 Rampaging squiggles, tangled hair, graduated blossoms all in a pretty row: such were the hallmarks of art nouveau, the style in vogue during the Edwardian era at the turn of the 20th century. It captured nature in the stylized lines of adornment and architecture, which today breaks free of its late-Victorian ancestry to tangle with the promiscuous movements of steampunk and urban tribal. This refinement of wildness, to have it come bursting forth in intricate ways, is a perfect direction for those who crave more sophistication in their jewelry boxes, but loath to part with cherished feral tastes.

Valerie Tyler Designs nouveau wave necklaceAn organic form softens one edge of a rectangle with what could be the break of a wave, or the tendrils of a plant, enshrining the soul of nouveau in a very simple, striking piece. From Valerie Tyler Designs.
Rose Dead art nouveau steampunk key necklaceBronze doesn’t always play well with silver, but it certainly does here in this filigree-embellished key. From Rose Dead.
PenelliBelle Victorian art nouveau bridal necklaceFloral swirling disrupts this otherwise very proper Victorian necklace with asymmetrical brassiness. It’s not often you see both aesthetics worked together in the same piece, and they complement each other fabulously. From PenelliBelle.
Woods Edge Jewelry Studio art nouveau silverware necklaceThis seller refashions antique silverware into rings and pendants, elevating housewares into elegant jewels. I just bought one of her necklaces, and I think it’s awesome that one of the most headturning pieces in my jewelry collection is a butter knife. From Woods Edge Jewelry Studio.
PlumeVine art nouveau fae bottle necklaceThis vial jumps straight into nouveau’s fae heart, surrounding a glass bottle with swoops and swirls of resin clay, vintage rhinestones, and bits of brass, topping it all off with a chained cork. And it comes filled with the dewdrops of citrine beads. From PlumeVine.

Pentacles and pentagrams weren’t exactly things you could pick up at the mall, and required some digging – mail order catalogs in the back of metal magazines where you could also snag an anarchy pendant, flea markets that would scatter them into biker rings and slave bracelets, or if you were lucky, chancing across an artisan at a craft show who’d load them up with chunks of amethyst.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, they were rarely encountered in mediums besides pewter, a shame considering how often these cherished pieces double as altar tools on the fly and deserve more focused craftsmanship. Happily, that’s not the case today, and not only can you find a wide range of artistic interpretations, but customization means getting every element personalized to your needs, right down to which phase of the moon it’s created in.

Pagan Treasures snake amber pentagram necklaceFive pentacles, linked by silver, amber, and snakes. It looks like the kind of precisely arranged symbology and materials that are pulled directly from a rich, intense dream – and according to the item description, it is. From Pagan Treasures. Note from the seller: Mention Chateau Bizarre when making a purchase in my shop, I will add a little extra present in thanks for your patronage.
PoetSummer Halloween charm braceletA charm bracelet surrounds the wrist in tiny portraits of vintage witches, accompanied by a frog, skull, a cat, a moon, and miscellaneous sparkling beadery. This looks like it would make fabulous noise. From PoetSummer.
Groovy Moon Creations purple pentacle moon necklaceThe moon and the star, in a Victorianesque fusion of antiqued silver, glitter, and Swarovski. Just the kind of regal piece to pair with a long black gown. From Groovy Moon Creations.
Purple Cat Jewels spiderweb pentacle earringsFor a more rustic look, the pentacles here appear within heart-shaped little spiderwebs, with each creature posed next to her handiwork, finished with a fall of blood. Radiant! From Purple Cat Jewels.
Janet Lily witchcraft charm braceletThis charm bracelet takes a pop-art approach to witchcraft, mixing black roses, hearts, and cabochons with stark declarative capital letters. From JanetLily.

These tiny little jackets are fantastic for increasing wardrobe versatility, where one simple black strappy dress can go Victorian, cabaret, or fetish just from changing up the shoulders and sleeves. It can also offer a little extra warmth in formal settings that might have the air conditioning tuned a little too high.

Angelika Liv black lace boleroFour kinds of black lace make up this bolero, for a subtle pattern clash of wild florals.
The pleated ruffle around the collar makes for a nice dramatic finish. From Messages of Passion by Angelika Liv.

Ella Phante Phashion medieval cotton sleevesThe sleeves of a medieval noblewoman, done up in the organic cotton of today. Practical, and at the same time, the kind of thing that’s hard to keep from dancing around in. From Ella Phante Phashion.

EyeScream lightning bolt shrugThis metallic purple and spandex confection brings to mind the wild costuming of professional daredevils. Or the formfitting stagewear of 70’s glitterglam. Whatever it ends up being worn to, it will indeed be memorable. It’s also OOAK, so move it if you want it. From EyeScream Industries.

French Sugar Vintage polka dot wrapThe tulle wrap that ties behind the back is a popular design on Etsy, and this one takes the retro staple of polka dots out of the realm of solid fabrics, going for a sheer organza that turns them into champagne bubbles. From French Sugar Vintage.

Black Norns gothic boleroBlack satin is broken up by light green organza on the puff sleeves and high pleated collar, a good look for both wicked stepmothers and absinthe fairies who don’t mess around. From Black Norns.

Whether reflecting the current state of your soul, or putting forth a clever arrangement of elements, these pieces are better if they’ve got some personality going on in them. Think about how many knuckles have gotten magic markered ever since Meatloaf Hot Patootied his way through The Rocky Horror Picture Show – it’s now in lowbrow vogue to get one’s most heartfelt sentiments tattooed there.

If your rings are mostly just gemstone cabochons or silver bands, throwing in one or two weird pieces makes for an intriguing mix of beautiful and bizarre. Or sometimes one ring is all you need, if it’s a big flashy attention-getter. This week, some possibilities to make elegant little sculptures out of your hands.

The Black Spot Books Victorian lace ringThis ring was cast from a bit of handmade Victorian lace, ending up as a distressed band of sterling silver. This would go well alongside the aforementioned cabochons for a note of lovely melancholy. From The Black Spot Books.
The Family Jewels spider cocktail ringThe iconic spider of classic bats’n'cobwebs goth is wired up in Czech glass beads to stretch out over the entire hand. Add one slinky black cocktail gown, and you’re set. From The Family Jewels.
A. N. Original Jewelry lock ringThe baroque detailing of the old-fashioned lock has been stripped away, leaving a minimalist, modern silver outline. From A.N. Original Jewelry.
ErikaD4ResinCurves spike ringThis spike ring looks as if someone sharpened a LeMarchand box and set it in a place for wielding completely different kinds of damage. From ErikaD4ResinCurves.
Gufobardo skull ringThis skull ring was crafted with protection and alternate identities in mind, but also makes for a tiny horror-movie nest of tubes and intestines. From Gufobardo.
