Q: Didn’t you guys used to be a portal?
A: Why yes, yes we did. We changed over to the blog format in late 2007 and to this day, we’re still wrestling with adaption issues.
Q: Such as?
A: We’d love to be like most other fashion blogs and happily chat away about someone’s cute designs, but we’ve gotten too many emails about other people’s disputes.
Q: Is this why I can’t comment on the shop reviews?
A: Yep. Our leftover portal format makes our site much more akin to a directory than a magazine, and we don’t have the bandwidth to get sucked into transactional legalities between a seller and a buyer. However, emails warning us of someone’s repeatedly bad business practices are always appreciated.
Q: Do sellers ever pay to get reviewed here?
A: NEVER. The reviews are shops we enjoy, and feel are worth trumpeting to the world at large. They are not paid posts, they are not advertising.
However, we’d like to mention:
1) Brand-new merchants who approach us for sponsorship get bumped to the top of the reviewing queue, just because it’s a nice thing to do for people who are supporting your work. And yes, we have turned down sponsors because their aesthetic wasn’t suitable to throw in front of our readers.
2) We belong to a bunch of affiliate programs, which are chosen on the basis of how well their catalogs fit with our content – shops that would have gotten a review whether or not they had a referral program. They’re reviewed just like any other webstore, except they’re given the additional Affiliates tag so you can see exactly which sites kick us referral $$ if you click over and go shopping. Also, these reviews stay in our directory if their programs happen to end.
3) We aim to run advertising that our readers want to see, and all the creatives on our site are handpicked/screened to reflect a glamorous small-biz sensibility. We are happy to hit you with high-heels, t-shirts and corsets every week – we will NEVER subject you to teeth whitening and weight loss ads.
Q: How do I get a product reviewed here?
Due to ever-tightening time constraints, we no longer do product reviews. Sorry!
